Double Opt-In
Double opt-in (also called confirmed opt-in) is a two-step subscription process. First, a user submits their email address through a signup form. Second, they receive a confirmation email and must click a link to verify their address before being added to the mailing list. This ensures the address is valid and the owner consented.
Why Double Opt-In Matters
Double opt-in protects your sender reputation by:
- ●Eliminating typos - Invalid addresses never enter your list
- ●Preventing spam traps - Confirmed addresses are legitimate
- ●Reducing bounces - Only verified addresses receive email
- ●Proving consent - The confirmation click is auditable proof of opt-in
- ●Higher engagement - Double opt-in lists have higher open rates because subscribers actively confirmed
While not legally required everywhere, double opt-in is considered best practice and is required under GDPR for marketing email.
